Amazon Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) Issues / Enhancements

July 20, 2012

Amazon Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) lacks a number of features found in traditional load balancers. These are just some of the issues we have experienced.

Term check

When configuring Amazon ELB to do a HTTP check it does not allow a positive or negative search for a term within the content returned.

HTTP host header

When configuring Amazon ELB to do a HTTP check it does not allow a hostname or HTTP host header to be passed. This can cause issues if more than one HTTP service / site is running on an instance.

HTTP Status

When configuring Amazon ELB to do a HTTP check it does not allow the HTTP status code to be specified, i.e. it assumes 200.
