PrimeLocation Mobile Website launched

July 28, 2011

Mobile web browsers (primarily Safari mobile) account for approximately 8% of traffic these days.

Today we launched a dedicated website for mobile users of PrimeLocation.com. The new website can be found at http://m.primelocation.com/. It provides a rich user experience although the experience degrades depending on the capabilities of your browser. The website does use some HTML 5 features such as using current location. You will experience the best results on iPhone and Android devices although the website works on, Windows Phone, etc. You can even use it with a desktop browser such as Google Chrome or FireFox 4+.

Using an iPhone or Android device try the following.

  • On the property details page try swiping across the photos with your finger from right to left.
  • The animation when switching to map views is particularly neat.

Well done to the team involved.

We’ll launch the equivalent for FindaProperty.com in August.

Recruitment

July 24, 2011

I have just been updating the organisation chart for the Technology department. 65% of the department have joined within the last 8 months of the 9 months that I have been here. We have cleared out the cruft, created new roles, right sized teams and recruited new people. All except one of my direct reports is new. We have done this whilst increasing throughput and quality and often with less people although we now have more people (50 in total) to tackle some big projects that we have planned.

Office move

July 24, 2011

We have just moved office from Warwick Street near Piccadilly Circus to Derry Street which is just off High Street Kensington. The new office location couldn’t be much worse for me to get to. Just 10 months ago I took one tube line to get to work now I have to take three. One of them being the Circle Line or Central Line. It doesn’t get much worse than these two in my opinion.

The old office was better located for lunch too with 5 sushi restaurants within a couple hundred feet, Thai over the street, a greasy spoon just up the road and China Town just a short walk away. It also had three pubs for drinks after work 30 feet away.

I do have my own office within the new building which is one benefit. The new building does have a Costa inside it however the new building is so vast it would be quicker at the old building to walk outside to Neros to get a coffee. Probably the biggest (and only) advantage of the new building is we have air-conditioning at last.

My team have done a terrific job in virtualising all the office servers in the 2 comms rooms. The 30+ servers are now 2 and we now have disaster recovery.

I can’t wait for the smell of fresh paint on Monday.
