Image Transformation Service

January 23, 2010

This week saw our first retailer go live with our new Image Transformation Service (ITS). ITS allows all images to be generated dynamically in real time from a single high resolution image.

This reduces image production costs and makes changing websites more efficient. For example if you want to increase the size of the images on a search results page there is no need to resize any images just change the configuration setting and all the images are automatically created at the new size when requested.

ITS can significantly reduce page weight too by optimising the file size of images.

ITS supports the following

  • Image format conversion
  • Image resizing
  • Image file size reduction
  • Image sharpening
  • Image softening
  • Image cropping
  • Image overlay
  • etc

January 11, 2010

Retail Week has an announcement from one of our retailers…

House of Fraser… said the period included the retailer’s biggest ever Christmas week. Sales rose 27% on a like-for-like basis on Boxing Day and online sales soared 91% on last year during the period.

Responses to some Tweets from people following debate

January 10, 2010

Somebody following the debate over the last couple of days has tweeted

“I should be able to chose what CDN, Monitoring, Analytics, and whatever else package I like”.

The short answer is you can choose whatever products you want with the eCommera CoreCommerce platform if you want to.

The benefits of going with the market leading products we have selected though are
1. Mature productised integrations which are highly configurable
2. Agreements based on scale which we are able to pass on to our retailers

“yep, completely, from scratch. it’s good. I can change as I wish upon the needs of my customers.”

I suppose you buy kit cars rather than buying a car like everybody else. Kit cars cost more to insure (akin to maintaining and enhancing a bespoke website), you have to take it back to the person who built it for maintenance, don’t have all the advances of modern cars, probably aren’t as reliable and safe and probably don’t last as long.

“Glad I still don’t use an ecommerce platform (no matter how tempting) – looks like it stifles creativity, and I’d become quickly frustrated”

You might be on other platforms but not on ours. Our platform is actually a development environment where you can write your own code, extend existing objects, etc. We actually develop our product in that development environment.

“comments are closed, it does smack of sticking your fingers in your ears and going nur nur nur I can’t hear you”.

Not true. Bob was using my blog as a plug for the company he is associated with and wasn’t completely or correctly answering my questions. The internet is full of enough mistruths without granting him the benefit of doing it on my blog.

eCommerce SaaS platform customer sizes

January 9, 2010

According to somebody associated with Venda he says “Venda is the market leader and the choice of the biggest retailers”. See comments. Anybody can check these claims out for themselves. Below I have plotted Alexa traffic ranks for a couple of eCommera’s retailers against six (I did actually check ten but discarded four as their ranks were not great) of what I thought would be Venda’s largest customers (ones they promote heavily). I have excluded the names out of politeness to the retailers. Data was taken from 9th Dec to 8th Jan. The orange bars are eCommera retailers and the blue bars are Venda retailers. Lower is better as it means a higher traffic rank, i.e. more visitors.

eCommerce SaaS platform customer sizes

Clearly they are not the choice of the biggest retailers and I am sure Demandware would not agree on the market leader statement either.

Demandware 2.10.2

January 7, 2010

We are hard at work upgrading all of our retailers from Demandware 2.10.1 to Demandware 2.10.2. Underlying product upgrades and refactoring necessary are free of charge to retailers on our platform. The same cannot be said for some of our competitors. If you are considering, SnowValley, BT Fresca, etc. double check whether your contract entitles you to product upgrades free of charge.

Christmas Trading Results

January 7, 2010

There are a lot of articles in the press at the moment claiming retailers have had a bumper Christmas trading period. Increases of approximately 25% across the board are being quoted. Without naming names many of our retailers did significantly better than this 🙂
